Some users of iMac have been experiencing problems with their ATI Radeon graphics cards. The chief problem is that the system stops responding while working. Now, Apple has re-released the iMac graphics firmware 3.0. The word re-released is being used because Apple released this version back in August last year and has now released it again under the same version number. This means the new update essentially contains few changes and is meant primarily to fix the aforementioned problem.
This firmware update form Apple specifically deals with the problems some graphics card on iMac systems have been causing. It is a download that includes the ROM flasher for Radeon GPUs. Apple hasn’t specifically mentioned what problems this new update fixes. However, it has claimed that the new update will resolve the problems that lead to system hang – so naturally, it is being surmised that the new firmware update deals with the graphics card problems.
Apple has also not detailed the systems for which this update is valid. So you can confirm this by opening the ‘Software Update’ on your iMac and see the patch. If you are able to view the patch listed, then the update will work on your iMac. But if opening the update prompts a message that it is not supported on your system, naturally it isn’t applicable to your system.
Do not forget to back up your system before you apple the update. During the course of installation, the update may cause your system to restart a number of times, but that’s perfectly normal, so you need not worry about it.
