Whereas Apple continues to stick to its policy of keeping its operating system and most of the other software closed, Android community is actively adhering to its philosophy of openness. In the past, we have seen a number of Android vendors release the source codes and unlock their devices. And now, HTC and Samsung have released the kernel source code of a number of their devices.
Samsung has released the Android 4.0 kernel source code for Samsung Galaxy S II. Android developers have been eagerly waiting for this for long. The source code is now publicly available for download.
HTC has followed closely in the footsteps of Samsung and has released the kernel source code of HTC Vivid, Sensation and Sensation XE smartphones. This code is also available for download now. Now that the kernel source code of these devices are here, developers can make use of them to tweak core device functions. This may allow the developers to overclocking the CPU and accomplish a number of other tweaks.
If you are one of the Android developers who has been waiting eagerly for the kernel source code of these devices, it is about time for you to read through the source code and come up with your own modifications.
