It has been rumored that Sony will be making a big announcement about the sequel to the PSP, the PSP2, at E3 next month. The rumors are emanating from within several gaming publishers, and with E3 just around the corner in June all shall be revealed as to how Sony plans to tackle Nintendo’s 3DS, also due for announcement at the show.
The sources don’t hail from inside Sony, or relate specifically to the rumored device’s design; instead, they come from various publishers, some of whom are unable to comment on PSP matters until “a specific announcement from the platform holder”, while others have initiated “a significant increase in marketing spend” aimed at the end of this year, something highly unusual for the current PSP.
Sony’s latest financial results show a desperate need for a new PSP. From 14.1million PSP sales in 2008, to 9.9million in 2009? Ouch. Especially considering the PSP Go launched last year.
