Apple has just announced iOS 5 at its annual developer conference WWDC with a lot of new features. Scott Forstall took the WWDC stage today to announce the latest version of Apple’s smartphone and tablet operating system. iOS 5 is now more like Android with OTA updates and the notification center. iOS 5 has about 1500 new APIs and 200 new features, 10 of which are pretty prominent including iMessage, notification center, newsstand, twitter integration, Safari reader, reminders, improved lock screen, a split keyboard for iPad, OTA updates and iCloud. The new iOS features have solved a lot of problems users have been facing for long, like the annoying pop-up push notifications and their non-persistent style. Notification center now aggregates all the notifications in a ubiquitous place and shows them on the lock screen as well. PC-connected updates were also a big problem and a reason of too many outdated iOS devices but the problem has been solved by the introduction of OTA updates. Users no longer need to connect their iPhones, iPads and iPods to their computer to activate them or update them. The updates are delta updates that take much less bandwidth to save us on our limited data plans. iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 & 2, iPod Touch 3rd gen and 4th gen. It is promised to be released to the masses this fall but the beta version is already available for download for developers.
