Last week the folks over at TechnoBuffalo got their hands on some leaked photographs of the BlackBerry Torch 2 and now they’ve managed to score a working pre-release handset, now they shot a video tour of the phone, covering its hardware, and touching a bit on the operating system (BlackBerry 7 OS) and its apps………
Although we’ve known for a while that a successor to the Torch 2 was coming, we haven’t heard so much as a pip from RIM since it leaked back in January. Thanks to sources stateside who managed to get their mitts on a Torch 2, however, we now know a bit more about it and what it looks like. In terms of design it’s almost identical to the original Torch, except the glossy black finish appears to be replaced in favour of matte silver finish, which should make it less of a smudge magnet and easier to hold too. While the Torch was quite a capable smartphone on its own right, it was relatively underpowered with a 600MHz chip. RIM looks set to remedy that in the Torch 2 with a 1.2GHz processor with hardware acceleration and 768MB of RAM, which should give it a bit more oomph. The screen size, however, will remain the same at 3.2-inch, at 640 x 480 resolution, which is a tad disappointing but not a deal breaker considering it packs a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The rear-mounted camera will be again be a five-megapixel number but this time around it’ll support HD recording at 720p.
On the brighter side, there’ll be 8GB of internal storage for multimedia, apps and whathaveyou, plus a microSD slot to expand it by a further 32GB. The real highlight though is that Torch 2 will run on BlackBerry OS7 rather than OS6 as was previously thought. Some of the improvements in OS7 include a revamped app launcher, voice-enabled universal search and a newer, faster web browser with HTML5 video support. Near Field Communications (NFC) technology will also be onboard, which will allow the Torch 2 to be used as an electronic wallet for making contactless payments much like the Oyster Card. The Torch 2 is expected to be officially unveiled this summer with a possible Q3 release. BlackBerry Torch 2 is now on film too so you can see all that BBOS 7 goodness running on the next iteration of the Torch, check it out below:
