Prysm’s Power Efficient Laser Phosphor Display Technology

LCD display technology is common in today’s market in both consumer electronics and PC products replacing older CRT technology. While you may think that its power consumption is low especially with AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic LED) technology but Prysm, a US based company has been developing a much more energy efficient technology targeted for next generation display products. Named as LPD (Laser Phosphor display), the technology is claimed to only consume a merely 25 percent of energy required by existing LCD or LED displays at similar size.

LPD is based on laser beaming that turns on and off at specific time when it sweeps through a pattern of phosphor stripes that able to create desired image with much higher resolution at relatively low sustaining power. Although the cost to manufacturer LPD will be quite high during initial development stage, but the company expects that it will drop tremendously in long run and more importantly, there is no worry for lamp replacement that tends to deteriorate over time. On top of this, the LPD technology stands great advantages in terms of higher resolution and wider viewing angles while consuming less power which could be very significant when being used in huge LCD video walls.

Besides suitable for large screen, the LPD is fully scalable and can be even implemented in smaller display products such as laptop or smartphone devices. No expected time frame on availability yet, this is definitely a huge milestone as part of effort towards greener environment.
