Facebook has plans of launching something along the lines of Apple’s App Store, pretty soon. With the huge population that Facebook hosts which essentially is a direct market for apps, Facebook can really make a great deal out of it. It will purportedly be called ‘App Center’ and the social network is expected to launch within the next few weeks.
According to Facebook, already a limited number of users are able to access the App Center and that even then, it is driving huge traffic. It is quite obvious that the largest social network on the web may well be the best possible hub for web apps.
The company released a statement saying, “Since we announced the App Center to developers last month, we’ve been testing it with a small percentage of users. We have no further details to announce at this time.”
The statistics are also on Facebook’s side. During the month of May, Facebook was able to send some 160 million users to mobile apps! And a lot of top Android and iOS apps come with Facebook integration, one way or the other. So Facebook is in a fine position to leverage this and start an App Center of its own.
For developers, there are a lot of incentives to be on the App Center. If they roll out good apps, Facebook highlights them as their reward. The App Center is primarily geared at helping the users discover the apps they are looking for and enhance their usage.
