Recently, many websites have seen their users’ login information being breached and released on the web by the hackers. This includes some of the tech big-wigs such as LinkedIn, Yahoo and likes. With such attacks on the rise, Facebook Connect has gradually emerged as a very significant tool which may help keep hackers at bay.
Facebook Connect essentially lets Facebook users log in to a website using their Facebook credentials. This way, the users don’t have to sign in for the website anew. Recently, Formspring servers were comprised and the passwords of 420,000 users were stolen.
The CEO and founder of Formspring, Ade Olonoh, did a post on this issue, apologizing to the users and concluding with these remarks, “If you have linked Facebook to your account, you can safely use Facebook Connect to log in.”
This trust in Facebook Connect is not misplaced. Whereas Facebook may not be the best of websites when it comes to privacy or user satisfaction, it certainly fares as among the best when it comes to security. So far, we haven’t seen a single instance where the login information of Facebook users have been compromised at a larger scale.
According to the Facebook Security Team member Fred Wolens, “There’s never been a breach of our login information. There aren’t too many tricks out there that we aren’t using.”
Facebook lays a huge stress on security since it has a huge user base to take care. With its total users numbering in upwards of 900 million, it is natural that the social network has implemented a long list of security features and has partnered with many leading anti-virus companies to thwart any possible attacks on its servers.
For website, Facebook Connect is a very convenient feature. They simply have to add a few lines of code to implement it and it is lot safer than other options. According to the CEO of Songza Elias Roman, “For our users, it means not having to create yet another account, and immediately having your social graph represented on Songza when you sign up.”
Many websites also make use of Open Graph integration, alongside Fcebook Connect, to attract more users. Roman further says, “Because of our Open Graph integration, in a given month each Facebook connected user generates at least one additional Facebook connected user, which is awesome. It’s easy to get set up for anyone comfortable working with APIs.”
