Ebola is one of the dangerous and deadliest outbreaks in the past few years. World Health Organization (WHO) mentioned that this virus could infect more than 20,000 people by November of this year. On the contrary, the United Nations (UN) warned that the world has 60 days to beat Ebola. However lately, WHO has revealed a new thing by saying that sperm can carry Ebola for up to 82 days.
Ebola virus (EBOV) is the most dangerous of the five known viruses within the genus Ebolavirus. This virus and its species both had an original name, but in 2010 the virus was renamed as “Ebola virus.”
The Ebola virus disease is highly contagious and is believed to have originated with fruit bats which are considered to be natural hosts for the virus. The bats carry and spread the disease, but are unaffected by it. Researchers have found that the Ebola virus mutates at twice the rate in people than in animal hosts, such as fruit bats. At then after seeing the killing rate of people by Ebola virus WHO said that the virus would infect over 20,000 people in West Africa by November of this year. The UN then said that “Ebola outbreak must be controlled within 60 days” or else the world would face an “unprecedented” situation for which there is no plan.
However, later it was found that out of 43 people, who were infected by Ebola virus and later recovered, 3 men still had the live virus in their semen for 40 days, 61 days and 82 days respectively after the onset of symptoms. WHO said that no case of sexual transmission of Ebola had been documented. But it is unclear whether semen that tests positive for Ebola is actually infectious or not.
