Fledgling company Chromasun plans to put the sun’s heat to work cooling. Isn’t it ridiculous to hear? But believe me, it’s going to be happened. They plans to install a solar-driven air conditioner–a technology with the potential to cut peak-time electricity use–at a commercial building in Abu Dhabi this year.
The founder of Chromasun & CEO Peter Le Lievre established the company to apply concentrating solar power techniques used in utility-scale power plants on a small scale. His company is showing some demo on Chromasun solar collector at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi this week. Chromasun solar collector collects sunlight 25 times.
Cooling accounts for a huge portion of the peak-time electrical load, representing about half of the peak electrical load in California. Le Lievre projects the Chromasun device can cut that consumption by a third and make dramatic reductions in individual buildings. A LEED-certified green building could cut its peak electrical load by about 90 percent, he said.
The technology behind Chromasun’s solar concentrator box originated at the Australian National University and is being commercialized by Ausra, the concentrating solar power company co-founded by Le Lievre.
Chromasun’s collectors use a Fresnel lens made from aluminum to concentrate light and then heat a liquid used in an absorption chiller, an air conditioning system used in some commercial buildings. It’s the same basic concentrating-solar technology used by solar thermal company Ausra, of which Le Lievre was a co-founder. But the “micro-concentrator” is designed specifically for existing air conditioners.
A micro-concentrator will not be sufficient to cool an entire building, but its maximum output coincides with the hottest times of the day when air conditioning systems are maxed out. The installation in Abu Dhabi, which is being demonstrated at the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority’s stand at the energy summit, can significantly reduce peak-time demand and help stabilize the grid during hot days, Le Lievre said.
Packing heat: a prototype of a solar collector designed to fuel industrial chillers.
In Abu Dhabi, temperatures can break 100 degrees on a daily basis for five months out of each year.
Chromasun also intends to test its system in places that have both good sun and incentives for renewable energy, such as California. Because its solar concentrators are relatively efficient at even high temperatures, the company said that the payback will be quicker than traditional flat-plate or evacuated tube solar collectors or solar electric panels.
Over the course of the day, the solar collectors change their angle for optimum exposure. The installation in Abu Dhabi will require that a two-phase absorption chiller system be installed to supplement the existing air conditioner.

You are a very brilliant person!
Saw your blog bookmarked on Delicious.
Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.
The information presented is top notch. I’ve been doing some research on the topic and this post answered several questions.
This is a great site, I love the theme you are using. I Stumbled it for you and bookmarked it on Digg. http://diysolarpanelsfordummies.blogspot.com/
It does seem that everybody is into this kind of stuff lately. Don’t really understand it though, but thanks for trying to explain it. Appreciate you shedding light into this matter. Keep it up.

It is vitally important that consumers are aware of the incredible benefits available today in the latest efficient air conditioners. The climate change issues facing the world have created a rapid improvment in the efficiency of air conditioners making them the only choice when considering the cost of running an air conditioner.
Solar energy systems are environmentally friendly, that is the biggest reason to choose it.
Having a solar appliance is very environment friendly and energy saving. This solar air conditioner is very sufficient and for sure many consumers will buy it. The design is also attractive and simple. It is perfect for those who are nature lover persons.
Anything that was powered by a solar energy was always considered as a nature friendly mechanism. Air-conditioner was made to extract heat from a certain area. And sometimes it is simply define as a appliance who make people comfortable in any weather.
What is the cost of a DIY project or is this a job for the pro’s to handle
Such a nice way to save energy. We should continue producing things like this to help our mother earth.
in duabi or in u a e whether i can buy a solar split ac . if any body know any contacting address pls inform sajeshpni@gmail.com
The technology of solar air conditioning would benefit from this abundant supply of free sunlight power to run the air conditioning elements. With the power source being free, the solar air conditioning system would quickly replace the more common systems in use today.

I agree what you said because i am looking at many places that gonna start solar energy rather than using different systems to improve air cooling. So, i think this is the best time we need new things to do.
I appreciate the post and the subject is being poited out.
Most of the home owners are running towards solar equipment to save energy. I am really agreed that if you are thinking for home improvement then try to use some energy saving equipment . It will increase the
efficiency of home.

This is a really awesome article. My wife is all about green. I swear, she’s switching over everything to solar power. Is this solar powered HVAC system on the consumer market, or is this a prototype?
