Fledgling company Chromasun plans to put the sun’s heat to work cooling. Isn’t it ridiculous to hear? But believe me, it’s going to be happened. They plans to install a solar-driven air conditioner–a technology with the potential to cut peak-time electricity use–at a commercial building in Abu Dhabi this year.
The founder of Chromasun & CEO Peter Le Lievre established the company to apply concentrating solar power techniques used in utility-scale power plants on a small scale. His company is showing some demo on Chromasun solar collector at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi this week. Chromasun solar collector collects sunlight 25 times.
Cooling accounts for a huge portion of the peak-time electrical load, representing about half of the peak electrical load in California. Le Lievre projects the Chromasun device can cut that consumption by a third and make dramatic reductions in individual buildings. A LEED-certified green building could cut its peak electrical load by about 90 percent, he said.
The technology behind Chromasun’s solar concentrator box originated at the Australian National University and is being commercialized by Ausra, the concentrating solar power company co-founded by Le Lievre.
Chromasun’s collectors use a Fresnel lens made from aluminum to concentrate light and then heat a liquid used in an absorption chiller, an air conditioning system used in some commercial buildings. It’s the same basic concentrating-solar technology used by solar thermal company Ausra, of which Le Lievre was a co-founder. But the “micro-concentrator” is designed specifically for existing air conditioners.
A micro-concentrator will not be sufficient to cool an entire building, but its maximum output coincides with the hottest times of the day when air conditioning systems are maxed out. The installation in Abu Dhabi, which is being demonstrated at the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority’s stand at the energy summit, can significantly reduce peak-time demand and help stabilize the grid during hot days, Le Lievre said.
Packing heat: a prototype of a solar collector designed to fuel industrial chillers.
In Abu Dhabi, temperatures can break 100 degrees on a daily basis for five months out of each year.
Chromasun also intends to test its system in places that have both good sun and incentives for renewable energy, such as California. Because its solar concentrators are relatively efficient at even high temperatures, the company said that the payback will be quicker than traditional flat-plate or evacuated tube solar collectors or solar electric panels.
Over the course of the day, the solar collectors change their angle for optimum exposure. The installation in Abu Dhabi will require that a two-phase absorption chiller system be installed to supplement the existing air conditioner.

Fortunately, these are also among the most energy efficient systems available today. The measure of how energy efficient an air conditioner or heat pump is for cooling is the SEER, short for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. A measurement called HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, is used to measure the heating efficiency for heat pumps. These new HVAC systems have a SEER of up to 19 and an HSPF as high as 9.5.
In order to produce energy from the sunlight, you need solar panels to absorb it; and that is how solar air conditioning works.

that suits your requirements.
All these things add up to a more efficient and longer lasting design for the new R410A units, and environmentally friendly to boot. That’s something to sink your teeth into. So it’s a very good idea to look for R410A or a notation about RoHS compliance when looking at a new window or portable air conditioner.
Innovative. Isn’t it ironic solar energy used as chill system? Nice to know that we can use solar energy as air contioner.

This plan would for sure make a lot of savings to those who will utilize the facility. Air conditioning consumes great amount of electrical current that is why it is costly. But with the innovation of solar powered facilities, this problem would be aided.
By having one of these new types of heat pumps installed, the overall cost will be potentially lower over the life of the system. It is energy efficient and it uses the more environmentally friendly Puron refrigerant, so it will continue to be serviceable. As a bonus, the new, Puron-using systems will easily quality for the tax incentive that is now offered by the U.S. government for installing energy efficient systems.
Great
invention! Using the sun to cool the air.
I think this is wonderful! the UAE is always figuring out the best way to keep their new buildings cold! even here in america we have systems now that come with a solar pannel to help power the system, It would work well in a cocoa beach air conditioning system!
Solar hot U.S.A. is a great website that provide a efficient solar water heating home water. Solar heating beautifully supplements hydronic heating systems, such as radiant floors, radiant baseboards and panels.
It’s really good to know that solar air conditioner in Abu Dhabi..Hope it should work..Air conditioner is something which is need now a days for all..And if it is solar than it can be easily affordable..Nice concept.
We have a similar system in the works here in the us. For a description visit our site at http://www.airdoctoracrepair.com
This innovation is ideal for places which have strong or direct sunlight. Since it is driven by solar energy, this is one power-saving AC unit. The harsh summer heat will be nothing with this invention.
Also, the lubricant used with R410A is synthetic, designed to mix better than those used with R22. This means the refrigerant flows more easily and moving parts are better lubricated, also translating to less wear and tear.
Third, since R410A operates at higher pressures than R22, the newly designed coils are heavier duty to withstand the pressure. A nice side effect is that since they are thicker, they vibrate less – yet another reduction in wear and tear.
This is wonderful invention..As it is directly sourced by solar we can called it as power saving unit

The solar power is the playing
well role to produce energy which is using for different purpose.
The process is suitable for both economical and saves energy source
with well balance of environment. Thank you so much for great idea. It is makes

An air conditioner is an appliance, system, or machine designed to change the air temperature and humidity from indoor air for thermal comfort. In another sense, the term can refer to any form of cooling, heating, ventilation, or disinfection that modifies the condition of air.
surprisingly amazing invention of human.
I am extremely satisfied i visited this particular website.
Using the sun to cool you down – genius.
Great use of sun light.Keep it up in future too.

Looks like a really great plan to reduce utility bills and environment footprints.
