Facebook To Shut Down Face.com’s “KLIK” App

At the end of the May 2012, we reported that Facebook May Buy Face.Com. Back in June Face.com announced that it had been acquired by Facebook. Within less than a month of its acquisition by Facebook, the social network is shutting down the facial-recognition software company’s app “KLIK“.

The software company made a third-party application Photo Tagger for Facebook that uses facial recognition technology to automatically tag photos of people. In 2010, Face.com released an open API to the public that allowed third-party developers to incorporate the technology in their apps. But the open API has one big limitation. The developers can only get 200 photos processed through Face’s servers per hour.

According to The Next Web report, Face.com said, “We’re excited to move forward to work with all our friends at Facebook. Part of this process includes closing down other products and services that we are no longer able to support, and this includes the Face.com developers API.”

Besides, Face.com has also removed its iOS app “KLIK” which allowed people to tag faces in photos using Facebook from the app store. Users who used Klik have until July 20 to retrieve their photos.

It’s been announced on Klik’s site, “After July 20 Face.com will dispose of the data we collect in connection with your use of the KLIK app and will not be migrating data to Facebook. All your data will be deleted – no exceptions.”

But the company assured the developers saying that it will continue to support the developer community and that it will offer greater opportunities to build products.
