According To Wind-up Knight Developer, iOS Piracy Rates Are Higher Than Android

Some days ago we have seen, a Scottish app developer called Matt Gemmell has claimed that Android app store has been designed for piracy. Another developer trusts that the opposite is true. Wind-up Knight is a popular game for both Android and iOS platforms. Its developer and the founder of Robot Invader named Chris Pruett has said that “For the record, our piracy rate is about 12% on Android and about 15% on iOS.”

Mr. Pruett also added that previously when Wind-up Knight was a paid app for iOS then they saw that the piracy rate was more like 80%. The Wind-up Knight developer also noted that almost 100% of their pirate users of Android and iOS are in China. He mentioned that “I think piracy is, as always, a red herring. You can’t stop it, but as long as it’s slightly arduous, it’s not a lot of lost sales. Because a huge number of people who pirate software would never buy it in a million years,”

Chris Pruett described the situation in this way, “You aren’t losing a sale to them. Piracy starts to matter only when pirate users can cost you money in other ways, e.g. network bandwidth and server cost. Yet another reason to be a free app in today’s mobile marketplace.”

It is a bad signal for both platforms. We could not find any statement from the companies about this issue.
