Syria is right in the midst of a civil war. And the sympathies of majority of the world population lie with the rebels, since the Assad regime has been actively involved in violating basic human rights. International media, too, has been overly critical of Assad and his refusal to bow down to the demand of the masses. So when two strange blog posts about Syria was found on Reuters, the readers knew that something was amiss.
One story was about the rebels bowing out of a town allegedly after having sustained huge losses. The other story was a fake interview with one of the heads of Free Syrian Army, Riad al-Assad. He stated in his interview that rebels had sustained huge losses until now. The interview further quoted him as saying that there was in-fighting between different rebel factions, for the sake of power, and that this had hurt the cause. And that is why they were giving up the insurgency.
But, these two stories were utterly false and planted. Later realized by Reuters taking down the posts, and tweeting , “Our blogging platform was compromised and fabricated blog posts were falsely attributed to several Reuters journalists. We are working to address the problem.”
So far, Reuters hasn’t stated who was behind the attacks. But since the stories attempted to produce a pro-Assad affect, it seems obvious that they were planted either by the Assad government itself or some Assad supporters.
