It has been a while since Google first showed its smart glasses. Envisioned under the Google Glass project, the company had promised to deliver those to the developers this year. Meanwhile, it has been enhancing the capabilities and tweaking the hardware of the glasses.
When Google first unveiled the smart glasses, they could run audio and video, and their navigation could be controlled through head movements. Since then, Google has been trying to add a whole lot of functionality to these glasses.
According to the head of Google Glass project, Babak Parviz, “We constantly try out new ideas of how this platform can be used. We’re also trying to make the platform more robust. This includes making the hardware more robust and the software more robust, so we can ship it to developers early this year.”
Elaborating on the hardware aspect of the development, Babak revealed that his team is trying to work out a battery for the glasses which can last at least a day upon single recharge. At the same time, the new functionality that the company is attempting to build into the glasses includes voice commands, a touch pad to tweak settings as well as a phone call feature.
However, Google still seems unclear as to what sort of content would run on these glasses and how this content would be accessed. Babak was asked whether it would be the regular mobile apps that would be loaded into the glasses, “This is a complicated thing. This is not a laptop or a smartphone. It’s an entirely new platform. So how people interact with it and what people do with it is totally new territory. “But we hope that when we ship this to developers, other people will also figure out what this very powerful platform is able to do.”
