Boston Globe School Program To Use iPad Instead Of Paper

There are many newspapers who let readers donate the proceeds of their subscriptions to an education fund when they go on vacation. These funds are used to provide newspapers and digital subscriptions to local classrooms. This week, The Boston Globe has announced that it is modernizing the “Newspaper in Education” program and taking it to iPads and projectors.

We have seen many newspapers having donation programs in the past where subscribers who go on vacation can donate their papers to schools. Students used the papers either for reading assignments or for art projects. Some younger students cut out photos from the newspapers. The Boston Globe has decided to change that trend. Recently, The Boston Globe has announced that it will use the reader vacation funds from its Newspaper in Education program in order to buy iPads and classroom projectors for Massachusetts public schools. In other words, the Newspaper in Education program will provide Apple iPads with digital subscriptions.

Vacationing subscribers have already funded US$65,000 for the Newspaper in Education program and with that money, The Boston Globe is going to buy 75 iPads of which 50 iPads will be distributed in Boston Public Schools and the rest 25 iPads will be distributed in Stoneham High School. Those iPads will be equipped with digital subscriptions to bostonglobe.com. The Boston Globe will run a pilot program through the spring semester. All the teachers will be given an onsite tutorial in “How to integrate Apple’s tablet into classroom?”.
