Ouya’s KickStarter Backers Will Finally Get The Game Console In March

Ouya was one of the most wildly successful KickStarter campaigns during the year 2012. The Android game console was able to amass a whopping $8.5 million on KickStarter and developers have received the game console by December, 2012. The company has now announced that KickStarter backers of the console will finally have their units by March this year, before retail launch in June.

Ouya

Ouya has become quite a sensation in the gaming industry. Typically, heavy-weights such as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have occupied the arena with their game consoles. But thanks to a very successful KickStarter campaign, Ouya has received raving reviews from critics and has already sealed partnerships with a number of game developers.

As a result, once the game console becomes available, nearly 200 game titles will be available on it already, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of apps and games from the Google Play store. According to Ouya, although the backers of the project will get their game consoles in March, online pre-order will become available in April whereas retailers will begin selling the gadget in June this year. Among the retailers who will be selling the game console is the e-retail giant, Amazon.

According to the CEO of Ouya, Julie Uhrman, the retail price for the game console will be $100. For another $50, users will be able to bag the touch controllers to go with it.

Speaking about the open-source nature of Ouya, Uhrman commented, ‘One of the promises of being open is you can use what we build for other things. But you can create accessories and peripherals for our device as well. At the end of the day, it makes our ecosystem richer.’
