Firefox OS recently created a lot of interest, with many smartphone vendors vowing to release Firefox OS phones soon. Geeksphone has apparently beaten all these vendors by announcing that it will start selling two Firefox OS phones from today. The phones are geared towards developers who want to try their hands at the new mobile OS.
In the past, companies like ZTE have promised that they would soon dish out Firefox OS phones. Others such as Sony have hinted at a similar possibility. But these vendors will probably curate such smartphones, running Firefox OS, which will feature high-end hardware and carry a substantial tag. Geeksphone, on the other hand, is making two Firefox OS phones available which are highly affordable.
The first model, called Keon is priced at $143 or €110. It packs a 1GHz Qualcomm Cortex A5 processor together with 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of storage space. Featuring a 3.5-inch multitouch screen, it comes with a 3mp camera, GPS and a number of other necessities.
The other model, Peak, costs $234 or €179. It comes with 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8225 processor and 512MB of RAM as well as 4GB of storage space. It has a more high-end rear camera, clocked at 8mp as well as a 2mp front-facing camera. The battery capacity is also better compared to Keon.
The prices are considerably low for a smartphone, and the best part is that these phones are well-equipped with all the required hardware to build Firefox OS apps or to simply work on the OS itself. In other words, they are the most affordable bet for the Firefox OS developers.
Firefox OS has already turned a lot of heads and the best part is that Mozilla is tapping into its huge developer community to gear the new OS towards the fast lane. Given the way this has piqued the interest of many mainstream smartphone vendors, it may seem that Mozilla is succeeding in its efforts.
