Ever since Microsoft lifted the curtain off its Windows 8 operating system, many hardware vendors have come out with hybrid laptops which are essentially a mix between a laptop and a tablet. While these machines haven’t gained much traction, Sony hopes to change that with the new Vaio Flip.
Sony seems to be banking heavily on Vaio Flip and the company is positioning it as one of the key offerings in its Vaio line-up. Vaio Flip comes in 13, 14 and 15-inch models and each of these models is configurable up to Intel Core i7.
As far as the looks go, Vaio Flip certainly outdoes most of its genre. The machine, when doubled as a laptop, looks like a stunning Ultrabook. The design of the machine includes a seam all along the cover. To move from laptop mode to tablet mode, all you need to do is flip the sliding switch beneath the monitor and push back the screen. This gives you a display-only, tablet-like experience.
The machine is easy to use and offers good functionality. As a combination of both a laptop and a tablet, it delivers fairly well performance. But the key problem with most hybrid machines has been that they are not as good as laptops or as portable as tablets. So whereas they are a space-saver, they may still not appear preferable to having a solid laptop and sleek tablet, separately.
Now it remains to be seen whether or not the new Vaio Flip garners any success. It arrives with a backlit keyboard, option between a solid-sate and a hybrid hard drive and weighs quite light at 2.6 pounds for the 13-inch model.
