Every Estonian Child Will Learn Programming From The First Grade

IT education is the key to a nation’s development. Different countries are working on this front to increase the percentage of people who are not only technology-savvy but also technology-literate. It seems that Estonia is now set to top the list by launching a new program – ProgreTiiger.

IT education

This new program, ProgreTiiger, essentially aims to equip Estonian students with programming skills, right from the first grade! Initially it is being launched in few pilot schools but the plan is to implement it in all the public schools.

The average age of an Estonian student in first grade is 7 to 8 years. The plan is to continue the ProgreTiiger program till the final year of public school, when the average age of the student is 16 years. Having hands-on programming training for so many years at such a young age, people will be bound for a successful career with thorough knowledge on IT.

Interestingly, IT companies are also backing this initiative and are helping the government implement it. The reason is simple: they have a stake in it. The more people become IT-educated, they more they would want to consume IT products. And eventually, these same first-graders who are being enrolled into the ProgreTiiger program may choose to join them.

IT education is being considered increasingly important by different countries. It is quite understandable since IT apparently holds the key to development and economic success in the coming years.
