HTML5 development has hit stumbling block in that so far, HTML5 developers have been unable to integrate a mobile browser to the hardware of a mobile device. If this issue is resolved, it can open up a whole world of possibilities for HTML5 developers as well as for the mobile devices. And it would now seem that Mozilla is on the verge of solving this riddle.

Mozilla’s open-source project which is working to this end is called Boot 2 Gecko (B2G). The project was launched towards the end of 2011 and has been attempting to create a true mobile OS. Such a mobile OS will then have numerous web apps work natively, even when based on browser technologies.

This can be a huge step forward for mobile software development. Essentially, it would mean that the software and the hardware are integrate into one single platform, something which hasn’t been achieved so far. So far, Mozilla has been progressing fairly well on the project.

The most difficult part of the project is to tie HTML5 to mobile hardware. This is to be  done through WebAPIs. The APIs will help connect data and functions and tie them both to the web via a browser.

When this will happen, a browser will no longer be a browser. It would be a platform in itself, interacting directly with the hardware of the device. Currently, Mozilla is following a two-tier strategy. The first part of the strategy is to create a mobile OS through  B2G. However, another part is to make Firefox for Android so capable that it becomes an HTML5-based browser platform.

However, to accomplish the latter, Mozilla will have to rely heavily on Android. It is like giving birth to a platform within a platform. While that may be a great achievement, it is still at least a year or so away.
