Netflix Coming To Android

Netflix has always been something of a fickle beast, lavishing treats upon just one platform at a time and coming to selected Android devices from early next year…..

Greg Peters of Netflix product development took to the company blog tonight to explain why the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 get streaming movies, but Android’s shut out. It comes down to “the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android.Peters says “we’ll launch select Android devices that will instantly stream from Netflix early next year,” and they’ll keep working with carriers and manufacturers to develop a better solution for the entire Android platform.Peters kind of makes it sound like Netflix itself will be “launching” new devices, but that seems a wee bit unlikely. “Select devices” and “early next year”.

Thanks

This is the reason I didn’t buy the galaxy tab.. No Netflix.. Blows

  3. Freeireland7

I have a tab and if isn’t on the list I might cancel netflix altogether

How can Android OS be any less secure than Windows? It’s total BS!

Okay, that question puts you right on par with a guy in the early ninety’s thought that the cd drive on his computer was a really cool retractable coffee cup holder, and specifically designed for that purpose, serving no other function other than holding your coffee cup. He actually thought Dell provided him a cup holder as a courtesy. He didn’t know what a CD was. Today, you’re that guy. Congradulations.

This is complete BS, I really don’t understand why android has to be the one left out in the cold on this one. I might be wrong and correct me if I am, but isn’t android the hottest selling platform out right now? And netflix isn’t jumping on this? Crazy! All I know is, if I were netflix, I would figure out a way to make it work on ALL android devices, not just” select devices” , and I would do it quick ….

That is BS, netflix sucks because of this!

This is BS I have the thunderbolt and I can’t watch netflix on it. That’s just retard the iPhone sucks and Windows phones have been having problems ever since they came out.

Weak. Android is the platform of choice iCrap is lame… Why would you purposely shut out a huge group of paying consumers… I guess their not trying to make more money at the moment and are focused on??? Supporting Apple and Microsoft??

This is definitely BS. I just got the Thunderbolt a week ago. I’ve been shopping around to find a phone that fits me best. I was going get iPhone because I knew for a fact that it has netflix. I asked the people who sold me the phone if the Thunderbolt gets netflix. They said yes. It wasn’t something I thought I needed to do my research on. Even when I asked the Sprint people about the EVO. They said yes. I love this phone, but when you’re on a train for over an hour in each direction, there are only so many times you can play an addictive game before you need something else.

Should have bought the iPhone. I regret getting my EcrapVO! what a disappointment! Like it even holds a candle to an iPhone! LOL

The H*LL WITH NETFLIX!!! Crackle.com has stepped up their game AND has no problem streaming to Android. I hope this young company keeps growing and keeps gaining ground in bringing movies and TV shows instantly. The best part about Crackle is that its FREE right now. Selection is limited but no problem watching video even though its not optimized for mobile. Look for good things from Crackle in the future. Hopefully someday we can all say, “Netflix who?”.

why this is poop! Is there another app that is as good as netflix that DOES run on the android?

  14. Larry56yr

It is all a bunch of political bs. People can jail break an Ipad/Iphone and compromise “platform security” if they really want to. It comes down to who you want to please the consumer, or the content provider.

Let me translate the Netflix guy for you: “We see that there is pretty much no way to stop our app from being pirated on Android, so we’re not releasing it until that changes.” Get it? Good. Now shut the fuck up.

I love how you take one small flaw and turn that into a reason that the company as a whole sucks and should be put out of business. I am sure you have a small flaw does that mean you should get the death penalty? So we can say Ec4moto who?

  17. Derek Wheeler

Yes it is political. It’s the studios wanting assurances that Netflix is taking every reasonable step to avoid piracy. Naturally they don’t want to do business with a company that doesn’t give a shit about their interests anymore than you would want a company you do business with to give out your SSN just cuz they felt like it and the consumer wanted it instead of you the content provider.

Well, a lot of people at work give me crap about that as well. But, I love the big screen on my Thunderbolt. It is a great phone. HBO Go is awesome for streaming. Plus, the.new gingerbread update is coming in about 10 days. That might be able to run Netflix. A whole bunch of people at my job just upgraded to iPhone. That’s cool for them. They’re just like everyone else. Thunderbolt is me.

Small flaw!!!???!!! They are preventing an entire market (a very large one) from access to their service. It is more like discrimination. What if oil companies made gas specific to other people’s car but not yours? Just found out Hulu supports my Droid 2 so I will be canceling Neflix and signing up for Hulu Plus. Watching it now and the picture looks good. I am going with the company that wants my business!

Congrats on your “Asshole of the Year” award!!!

Any plans for your “select devices” to be the Acer Iconia a500? I feel ripped off by Netflix.we should have a choice not your company especially since you seem to have no problem in taking my money every month-

How much does apple pay netflix to monopolize the market? This is what it comes down to!!!

Derek, you don’t happen to work for netflix do you? YOU SURE SOUND ANGRY! GRRRR!
