A Look At Intel’s 4-Inch Next Unit Of Computing

Intel’s Next Unit of Computing is truly tiny. Its dimensions are a mere 4″ x 4″ and in such a size, it packs an astounding amount of functionality. Initially, NUC was being created primarily for kiosks and similar machines. However, the concept has proved so popular that Intel is now expanding the realm of its applications and hopes to make it available also for etailers and system integrators.

Intel hopes to introduce an initial NUC system some time during the third quarter of this year. So what specs and what processing power will this initial edition pack? For processing, you will get a mobileĀ  Core i3 processor inside the tiny NUC together with a HM65 chipset. Moreover, it is expected to arrive with a whopping 4GB of RAM and 40 GB of storage space.

A slight setback is that it won’t be featuring the latest USB 3.0 ports, rather it will come with USB 2.0 ports. Nonetheless, it will support both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity and its motherboard will feature dual SO-DIMM and mini PCIe slots.

Although the overall configuration of this first version is pretty decent, don’t be put off by some components which may need further improvement. This is because the chipmaker will launch yet another edition of NUC in the fourth quarter, an edition which is expected to be equipped with 7-series chipset, Thunderbolt connectivity and a USB 3.0 port.

Currently, Intel is having some problem in resolving the cooling issue of the hardware. According to the company, it is working with other vendors to sort out these issues as soon as possible.
