Samsung has been working on curved OLED displays for quite some time now. The company has now unveiled a new smartphone, Galaxy Round, which packs a rather unusual 5.7-inch curved OLED display. The big question is, how convenient it is to use a curved display and that will you prefer it over a regular 5.7-inch screen?
The hardware specifications that this handset packs under its curved hood are fairly impressive. For instance, it comes with an impressive 13 megapixel camera which is juiced up through a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM. Packing a rather huge 5.7-inch display, Galaxy Round is nearly 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g.
The curved display of the handset is a 1080p screen, which adds to the appeal of the handset. However, many have questioned as to what purpose does a curved display serve, apart from offering slightly tweaked looks for the handset. Samsung claims that thanks to the curved OLED display, users can make use of a feature called ‘Round Interaction.’
This feature essentially lets you get basic information from the handset’s screen even when the screen is off. For instance, you can see if there are any missed calls, the battery status and other basic details simply by tilting the handset on a flat surface.
Moreover, according to Samsung, when using the handset and switching between different screens, you will get a very smooth experience. It will be like ‘one continuous transition’, we are told. Not only that, Samsung is also touting the curved display as an ideal screen to interact with photos and videos.
We haven’t been given a definite date about the international launch of the handset. All we do know for now is that the handset costs a whopping $1013 in South Korea.
