myIDkey: A Voice-Activated And Fingerprint Secure USB Drive Protecting Passwords And Data

With all the devices and accounts we use everyday, everyone has to resort to multiple login credentials, and it’s hard to remember them all. Writing the password down on a piece of paper is not secure, nor is keeping them in a text file in a computer. There is password storage software like LastPass, but you have to remember a password to get in to that app too. Sometimes we even forget the password for that app. But wouldn’t that be great if a simple slide of a finger be enough to access all our personal codes and information? Yes, you heard me right. It’s called myIDkey; it is a voice-activated, fingerprint secure Bluetooth/USB Drive that displays passwords and personal info online and on the go.

myIDkey is a voice-activated USB drive that not only stores your data, but also lets you access all your critical and private information with a literal swipe of your finger. The device comes with a biometric scanner which ensures that you are the only one who can view all the data that you have inputted into it. For example, if say the name of your bank, and the key will show related account information on a OLED display. If the fingerprint isn’t enough security for you, you can also optionally set up a tap sequence to go along with it. For example, you want the key to unlock only after you’ve scanned your thumb and tapped on it twice.

That’s not all. Users can plug the key into a computer where it interacts with myIDkey software to function as a password manager, auto-filling userid and password fields like others. Plugging the device into a computer will also charge the battery in the myIDkey. It also works with mobile devices. For interacting with mobile devices, myIDKey communicates over Bluetooth, providing password management using iOS and Android apps.

The myIDkey has several high-end security features. It can be set to erase all secure data after some number of failed attempts to gain access. It can be restored, with proper authorization, from backups on your own local storage, a cloud service like Dropbox. The device itself is designed so that you would have to destroy it in order to open it up and access the internal components. Here’s a demo video for you showing how the device works.

myIDkey maker Arkami is now gathering funds through crowd funding website Kickstarter. To make the project successful, Arkami needs a total fund of $150,000. But it has attracted people so much that already 3,121 backers have donated $367,511 (as of writing).

You can get your own 8GB storage equipped myIDkey by making a minimum pledge of $99 by March 22. If the Kickstarter project exceeds its next stretch goal of $400,000, all the donors will get a 16GB storage equipped myIDkey, no matter what amount they donated. The device is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2013.
