Facebook coined the term social gaming by hooking up vast hordes of users to games such as Farmville, Mafia Wars etc. But that era is over, with the aforementioned games losing popularity. So Facebook now wants to go after the real deal by introducing high quality game titles to entice actual, avid gamers.
Actual gamers who regularly indulge in playing high-quality games often end up spending a lot of time, and money, on their games. It is this audience that Facebook is trying to capture and to that end, it is currently collaborating with the developers who are already working on nearly 10 hardcore gaming titles.
Facebook wouldn’t be developing these games on its own. Rather, the social network has partnered with third-party developers so that it gets to bag 30% of the revenue from in-game purchases.
Among the high-quality games that Facebook has launched already or is about to launch, are the few mentioned below:
- KingsRoad: It has been developed by Rumble Entertainment and is currently being tested on Facebook.
- Offensive Combat: It is a first-person shooter game which supports multiplayer mode, and has already amassed 1 million monthly active users during a test run.
- ChronoBlade: This one comes from nWay, the studio which created other smash-hit titles such as Grand Theft Auto. ChronoBlade is an action role-playing game.
According to Facebook’s director of game partnerships, Sean Ryan, “Role playing games, strategy, core or mid core games, that’s what we expect to see next year for the explosion of genres.” This is manifest in the recent game launches by the social network. However, it remains to be seen whether or not these recent launches are able to amass the same level of popularity as was once garnered by the likes of Farmville.
