Sony PlayStation 4 May Use AMD Technology

Sony has been facing increasingly greater competition from other gaming console makers such as Microsoft. Especially now that Microsoft is trying to make the motion-sensor Kinect a regular part of it’s game console, Sony is under pressure to up the game if it wants to stand its ground. Sony already has added enhancements to its recent release, PS Vita and now we are hearing that an upcoming Sony game console may be using AMD’s graphics technology.

This is only a rumor, for now, since neither AMD nor Sony has affirmed or denied it. The actual rumor is that Sony is working on an ‘unnamed’ gaming console that it may release next and that the gaming console will be making use of AMD’s technology. Since we do know that Sony will most probably release Play Station 4 as the next game console, it is being said that the AMD technology will then be used in it.

If this is true, this will be a significant departure from Nvidia to AMD. PlayStation 3 by Sony made use of Nvidia’s chips, so Nvidia may be in for a disappointment. This may also be Sony’s attempt to compete Microsoft’s Xbox at level ground since Xbox 360 uses AMD technology. AMD recently said that this year, one of the major revenue streams for AMD will come from the gaming end, so there seems some substance to this rumor.
