Hacker Accomplishes Untethered Jailbreak On iPhone 4 Running iOS 5.0.1

Pod2g is a well-known iOS hacker who, according to his twitter profile description, has been into iOS hacking since 2009. In the latest achievement by Pod2g, he has successfully been able to accomplish untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 4 running the iOS 5.0.1. Pod2g used the same firmware exploit that he had used for an untethered hack of iPod 4g devices last week.

What does untethered jailbreak mean?
An untethered jailbreak is a kind of hack in which you don’t need a connected reboot through an external device and use that to execute commands on your device. This means that you can run your iPhone with jailbreak, restart or reboot it and continue using it normally. This is not the case in a tethered jailbreak where every time your iPhone starts, you have to reboot your phone through an external device, otherwise the phone won’t start. A video here demonstrates exactly the differences between a tethered, untethered and a semi-tethered jailbreak.

Untethered jailbreaks have been rather  common on the older Apple devices but the newer devices are making them increasingly hard to accomplish.

This current untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1 is good news for a lot of iPhone users who have been waiting for the untethered jailbreak and hadn’t updated to iOS 5.0.1. Now that the jailbreak is here, they can easily update to iOS 5.0.1 and then when Pod2g releases the untethered jailbreak, they can jailbreak into their iOS without any qualms. Although the Chronic Dev Team, the iOS hackers’ team of which Pod2g is a part, hasn’t  given a definite date for the release of the jailbreak, it is expected that they will release it after iOS 5.1’s release date is announced.
