Romanian Developer Brings Android FaceUnlock To iPhone

If iPhone 4S owners had a good reason to envy the high end smartphones from Apple’s rival companies, that was the face recognition option delivered by the latest Android handsets, such as Galaxy Nexus. Well, now a Romanian team of developers, gathered under the name of Webcode, took care of this and brought to iPhone owners the Face Unlock feature.

As reported by Romanian language technology website, boio.ro, the software allows the iPhone to recognize their owners and only then the smartphone is unlocked. The owner must position his face in the designated area, and after a few seconds the app analyses the face’s characteristics, compare it with a reference image and decides that the one requesting access is the owner. If not, a “sorry” message is displayed and the smartphone keeps its secrets.

This security mechanism only applies to a locker area on the iPhone and does not replace the slide to unlock mechanism. The Romanian developers are expected now to deliver a new app, capable of taking the Face Unlock to the next level and to create a similar software capable of protecting all the data stored on the iPhone. It is still unclear if the app designed for iOS can be tricked with a printed picture of the real owner, the same as its Android counterpart.
