Imagine a mobile phone that you can charge simply by supplying heat to it. You can put it next to a hot source or simply let it stay in your pocket and get warm – and as a result, it will recharge. While the concept seems futuristic, it is quite possible and has been presented by designer Patrick Hyland. The concept phone has a copper-coated back-case which enables heat to be conducted more effectively to the device.
According to Hyland, when charging this concept phone for the first time, ‘it would take approximately seven hours to reach full charge, then after that it’s continuous[ly charging] by keeping the phone in areas between 86 degrees and 104 degrees Fahrenheit.’
The most significant aspect of such a phone is that it can save huge amounts of power that is used in charging mobile phones. Specifically in regions where power sources are scarce, people can charge such a mobile phone very conveniently. Moreover, the looks of the device are also quite impressive. It would come with copper-coated back, something which we haven’t seen in a mobile phone yet. However, what we are concerned about is that using copper as heat sinks on the back may result in a significant increase in the weight of the device.
For now, this is just a concept and Nokia has no plans of working on it yet. But Hyland has stated that he is willing to collaborate with any company who would want to work on it. Given the fact that we live in a world where power sources are becoming increasingly scarce, a mobile phone which charges without any of the conventional power sources can be a truly revolutionary and useful device.
