Recently, research firm Nielsen has published a research report about the growing rate of smartphone users. According to the report, two third of new mobile buyers are now settling for smartphones instead of feature phones. Smartphone users have also reported to be the majority (54.9%in June 2012) among US cellphone users. No doubt, smartphones are dominating the mobile phone market. The market is, however, fragmented among different platforms and vendors.
Currently, Android is dominating the smartphone platform in US. Almost 51.8% users are using Android based smartphones where 34.3% users prefer Apple iOS and 8.1% of the users still resort to RIM’s Blackberry. Among recent buyers who purchased their smartphone during June 2012, 54% said they chose an Android handset and 36% prefer an iPhone.
Though Android is the leading smartphone platform, it is fragmented among handset makers. Three of the major handset makers holding most of the Android market are Samsung, HTC and Motorola, chronologically. Among the three, Samsung and Motorola also holds substantial market share of Windows based phones.
