Christmas is a great opportunity for consumer technology companies to do a massive business. Many companies give huge discount on products and attractive offers for consumers, and the gadgets (especially smartphones and tablets) sold feverishly. According to app analytics company Flurry, on Christmas day, more than 17 million devices have been activated.
Using activation data of 260,000 apps, Flurry found that from Dec 1 to Dec 20, around 4 million devices have been activated per day. But no one thought that such huge amount of iOS and Android devices would be activated on Christmas Day than on any other day of the year. On Dec 25, huge amount of iPhones, iPads, Galaxy‘s, Kindle Fires, and many other devices, have been activated than on any other day in history. Flurry found that a total of 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on this Christmas day, which is a 332% increase over the December baseline.
Apart from this, Flurry also found that from this Dec 1 to Dec 20, a total of 155 million iOS and Android apps were downloaded each day on average. But on Christmas Day, total of 328 million iOS and Android apps were downloaded, which is an increase of 112% over the Dec 1 – Dec 20 baseline.
Flurry also revealed the ratio of iOS and Android phone and tablet activation during the month of December. From Dec 1 to Dec 20, 80% of the activated devices were smartphones, and rest 20% were tablets. On Christmas day, 51% of the activated devices were tablets, while 49% were smartphones.
Flurry mentioned that on Christmas Day 2011, 6.8 million mobile devices were activated. Compared to Christmas 2011, mobile device activation on Christmas day 2012 is more than 2.5 times larger, which surpassed its own baseline by more than 300%.
