During the launch event of the new iPad, Apple claimed that in numerous benchmark tests, the A5X processor was up to four times faster than Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor. Naturally, Nvidia demanded Apple to prove this through whatever benchmark tests it had run to reach the conclusion. Now, Laptop Magazine has compared the two chips through a number of benchmark tests and their results are posted below.
ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime comes with a Tegra 3 processor. So the new iPad was matched against this tablet during the benchmark tests.
The results of these benchmark tests certainly do not conform to the tall claims made by Apple. In fact, in a test, Tegra 3 did a lot better than A5X processor. In total, Laptop Magazine tested the processors for four benchmark tests.
The first of these was the GLBenchmark 2.1. In this benchmark tests, an animation of ancient Egypt was ran on the two tablets. The new iPad did a lot better job than Tegra 3 on this test. It processed 6718 frames at 60 frames/second whereas Transformer Prime could manage 5939 frames at 53 frames/second. During the Geometric test, the new iPad processed 7,530,524 frames at 57 frames/second while Prime did 3,523,926 at 27 frames/second. This is probably a direct consequence of the fact that the new iPad comes with quad-core graphics.
The second benchmark test was Geekbench. This test primarily was meant to gauge the processing powers of the two chips. In this test, Tegra 3 did a superb job which the new iPad came an average second. The score by Tegra 3 was 1571 while that by the new iPad 692. In the memory subtests too, Tegra 3 bested the A5X chip but in stream subtest, the A5X chip had the upper hand.
The Browser Benchmark test couldn’t have been very accurate since the two tablets use entirely different browsers. Nonetheless, Apple’s Safari bested Prime’s Android browser overall.
Finally, in the subjective gaming tests, the two tablets were nearly evenly matched, although the new iPad did mesmerise the testers with its crisp clear Retina display.
