Toshiba confirmed that it was working on glasses-less 3DTV technology late last year, but this year’s CES in the first real preview being offered of the technology. Shown on a 56″ screen, images were impressive, but it’s clear that there are limitations.
The tablet has a 10.1 inch widescreen multi touch HD display with resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 16:10 aspect ratio.
The yet to be named Toshiba tablet is powered by a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with integrated graphics card. It runs on Android Honeycomb OS.
The tablet supports Flash content, which Apple’s iPad doesn’t. Toshiba has used what it calls Adaptive Display technology, which automatically adjusting the display’s brightness and colour according to the environment. It uses Toshiba Resolution+ video enhancement technology that improves colour, contrast and sharpness, making standard definition video look better. Toshiba’s tablet also uses the company’s proprietary sound enhancement technology to add more capabilities to the device’s stereo speakers.
The tablet also features a built-in motion sensor and an on-screen keyboard with Haptic feedback.
Toshiba’s Gingerbread tablet has a slip-resistant rubberised cover which can be changed and will be available in multiple colours. The battery (prismatic lithium ion) is also replaceable, unlike the iPad’s battery.
Toshiba’s tablet features a two mega pixel front-facing camera for video chats and a five mega pixel rear camera for taking photos and video. The device includes integrated GPS and compass for geo location services. The tablet has a host of connectivity options and ports including an HDMI port to share photos and video with an HDTV; a full-size USB; a mini USB 2.0 port; and a full sized SD card slot. The device can connect to Bluetooth and 802.11n Wifi networks; and comes with an optional docking station charger that has additional connectivity ports.
Toshiba has also included two speakers to provide stereo music and sound. This too, was impressive as the fidelity of a song we sampled was clear and featured a range of frequencies.
The Android tablet from Toshiba will start shipping in the first half of the year, but pricing has not been announced.
