GitHub Blocked In China By The Government

Chinese government keeps expanding the list of websites which it blocks in the country. Notorious for the suppression of freedom of speech, some had hoped that the regime would at least spare the hardcore software part of the internet. But that doesn’t seem to be the case as the government has now reportedly blocked access to GitHub.

GitHub

GitHub is one of the most famous social coding websites. Developers flock to the website to learn about new tools, help each other out and pool their resources to different projects. The recent blocking of the website in China was first revealed by the Chinese web monitoring site, GreatFire, which stated,

“GitHub completely blocked in China now, including HTTPS: https://en.greatfire.org/https/github.com. Bad news for Chinese software developers.”

Within a few hours, many other developers were reporting that they were unable to directly access GitHub from mainland China. The website had been blocked on a DNS level which is why most users directly blame the government for having revoked access to it.

Chinese developers can still access the website through a range of proxy tools. But that will slow things down for them and also make code submission and other activities on GitHub a hassle.

Commenting on the whole issue, a GitHub spokesperson has stated, “GitHub is still investigating, but it does appear that we’re at least being partly blocked by the Great Firewall of China. We’re looking into it, and will update with more information when we have it.” Suffice to say that the move by Chinese government is yet another shameless violation of basic human rights.
