Ever since Aaron Swartz’s tragic suicide, the web has been abuzz with how the prosecution went to great lengths to somehow put Swartz behind bars for a negligible crime. Some publications tried to portray him as suffering from depression, apparently to turn the heat away from the federal prosecutors. Swartz’s girlfriend has now refuted those claims in a Tumblr post.
Nearly all of Swartz’s friends testify that he did suffer from a certain case of depression, and his girlfriend Stinebrickner-Kauffman affirms that. But she goes on to say how Swartz had coped up with that for many long years without ever letting it go out of hand.
Kauffman states that Swartz was full of ambitions and goals and loved to spend time with his friends and other favorite people. In fact, only two days before his suicide, Swartz was busy discussing a new organization that he was trying to build. During the conversation with his Australian friend, in which he discussed this organization, Kauffman says that he seemed as usual, charming, witty and in a really good mood.
So to deem that he committed suicide out of depression is somewhat of an intentional falsity. AtlanticWire, for one, tried to portray the entire case in a different light by making such a claim and thus, warding off any responsibility that may come on federal prosecutors.
The truth, however, is quite as Kauffman puts it, “I believe Aaron’s death was caused by exhaustion, by fear, and by uncertainty. I believe that Aaron’s death was caused by a persecution and a prosecution that had already wound on for 2 years.”
She further says, “Over the last 20 months of his life, Aaron spent more time with me than with anyone else in the world. For much of the last 8 months of his life, we lived together, commuted together, and worked in the same office. I was never worried he was depressed until the last 24 hours of his life.”
