Facebook is celebrating its 10th birthday on February 4, coming a long way from its inception to become the largest social network around. The company is celebrating the occasion with a special feature called ‘Look Back‘, letting you trace your Facebook history in a video.
Look Back is a brilliant feature. In the form of a video, it presents you the highlights of your presence on Facebook since the day you joined the social network. You are shown photos from your earliest days on the social network, your most popular posts, your recent display pictures and all of that embellished with a fairly nostalgia-invoking background music.
According to a statement from Facebook’s creator and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, “It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. It’s been amazing to see how people have used Facebook to build a real community and help each other in so many ways. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and responsibility to connect everyone and to keep serving the community as best we can.”
Zuckerberg also posted a sentimental note on his official Facebook profile, citing how the landscape of online social networks was changing. According to him, the first decade of Facebook was meant to bring people together and the next decade will be focused more on refining the content-sharing experience and gearing it more towards solving actual, complex problems.
In his own words, “Today, only one-third of the world’s population has access to the internet. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to connect the other two-thirds. Today, social networks are mostly about sharing moments. In the next decade, they’ll also help you answer questions and solve complex problems. Today, we have only a few ways to share our experiences. In the next decade, technology will enable us to create many more ways to capture and communicate new kinds of experiences.”
