Jim Mergard has worked at AMD for 16 years and is known for his extra-ordinary skills and expertise in designing chips. Mergard served at AMD in the capacities of vice president and chief engineer, but recently left to work at Samsung. However, Apple was quick to woo away the highly valued designer and bring him to Cupertino to work for Apple.
Mergard has been very high in demand in the tech arena. He is considered a maestro when it comes to designing and building processors. He has been involved in creating some custom-design processors for low-end laptops which is one of his many significant achievements.
Recently, Mergard left AMD for Samsung. The new hire was highly promising for the company and it was expected that he would help Samsung steer towards custom-design chips for its devices. However, before that could happen, Apple decided to entice Mergard.
According to Wall Street Journal, Mergard has finally decided to join Apple. It doesn’t come as a surprise since Apple has been trying to bank its edge over other competitors in the smartphone and tablet market on its custom-designed cores. We saw the first of these in iPad, which featured an Apple-exclusive A4 chip.
However, Apple has also been planning to work on desktop and laptop processors, apart from using its own chips in the mobile devices. It has been just rumors until now. But hiring Mergard may be the first step Apple has finally taken to enter the processor market at full-throttle.
