Christmas Day is surely the day of treats and gifts. Apparently, App Store was on the receiving end of goodies this year on Christmas. It witnessed an 87 percent jump in the average daily downloads, leading to a whopping 70 percent increase in its revenue.
However there’s a slight irony at play here. Whereas the big day certainly brought in additional revenue for Apple, the fact is that the most downloaded apps on the said day were Google’s YouTube and Google Maps apps. Both were top of the list on Christmas Day.
Next to them on the list were Apple’s iWork, ElfYourself and Skype for iPad. Interestingly, iPad and iPad mini were drawing a whole lot more than the traffic they normally draw. This essentially means that a lot of these tablets were handed out as gifts and the new users were quick to power up their iPads, thus significantly bolstering the downloads on the Store.
We will be able to lay our eyes on more statistics and figures during Apple’s earnings calls in January. Meanwhile, Amazon has also divulged that it was able to have a field day with the maximum number of digital downloads on its website. As usual, Amazon didn’t provide hard numbers but claimed that on Christmas eve, it witnessed the highest ever number of movies, TV shows and apps downloads.
These two bits of news fit into the puzzle when we see that according to independent estimates, this year the Christmas Day marked the highest number of gadgets ever activated on a single day. Naturally, the mass activation led to a huge bump in the digital downloads, both on App Store and Amazon.
