Things have been moving faster in Europe. Google has been waiting for the US approval for its Motorola acquisition by the Department of Justice, but while it has been benched, the European Union gave the company the go ahead. “We have approved the acquisition of Motorola Mobility by Google because, upon careful examination, this transaction does not itself raise competition issues,” EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia commented on the decision.
The official statement said that the Commission will still be keeping a watchful eye on the behavior of all market players in the sector, especially those who manifest active patent use. Don Harrison, who’s a Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Google stepped forward to hail the European Union decision and declared it an important milestone in the approval process.
Google and Motorola announced their decision to shake hands in August last year, with Google paying as much as $12.5 billion for it. This will give Google access to Motorola’s impressive patent portfolio which will indeed be a useful tool in the eternal Android iOS wars. Even if there were some concerns raised by the fact that Google acquiring so many patents might inhibit competition, the voices have been apparently silenced. Just look at Apple and Samsung fighting out in courts all over the planet.
