ITU Approves H.265 Video Format, Allows High-Quality Video On Half Bandwidth

A new video format, namely H.265, has been approved by International Telecommunications Union after some deliberation by the regulatory body. The great thing about H.265 is that it allows the transmission of up to 4K videos on networks even with low bandwidth.

Currently, the most advanced video format followed by the industry is H.264. The adoption of the format had been primarily due to the fact that Apple supported it and consequently, others who wanted to produce content for the recent iterations of iPad, also had to stick with H.264.

H.265 is not much different from H.264 except that it can bring high-quality videos even on low-bandwidth networks. That’s a feature which wasn’t included in H.264. With the efficient usage of bandwidth, H.265 can make available high-quality videos even on mobile devices such as a tablets and smartphones. For such connections which boast higher bandwidths, H.265 will provide video with even higher quality.

According to analysts, a high-quality video, as much as of 4K resolution, rendered in H.265 format, can be streamed on a connection providing a mere 20 – 30 Mbps of bandwidth. By contemporary standards of video transmission speeds across networks, this is highly efficient.

For now, H.265 has simply been approved by ITU. It remains to be seen how the vendors such as Apple and other take to it. Their response will hugely determine whether or not the industry, at large, decides to go with the new format.
