Google Wallet Gets Cloud-Based Support For Major Credit And Debit Cards

Google Wallet has been around for some time but the tool hasn’t gained a lot of traction in the tech world. One of the possible reasons of this could be that not many users have found it particularly convenient to make use of the Wallet. However, now Google Wallet is finally able to support all major credit and debit cards through cloud.

This great new addition to Google Wallet may finally help it become mainstream. With the new cloud-based support for credit and debit cards, it is now able to support Visa, American Express, MasterCard, Discover and others.

Imagine being able to make use of virtually any credit or debit card on your Google Wallet when doing online or offline shopping. With such wide support available on Google Wallet, it can finally become a one-stop solution for shopping.

According to the head of Product Management for the Google Wallet team, Robin Dua, “To support all credit and debit cards, we changed our technical approach to storing payment cards. The Google Wallet app now stores your payment cards on highly secure Google servers, instead of in the secure storage area on your phone. A wallet ID (virtual card number) is stored in the secure storage area of the phone, and this is used to facilitate transactions at the point of sale. Google instantly charges your selected credit or debit card. This new approach speeds up the integration process for banks so they can add their cards to the Wallet app in just a few weeks.”

The team has also ramped up the security of Google Wallet by introducing a new feature. This new security feature allows a user to remotely disable his wallet on his mobile in case it is stolen or lost. All the user has to do is to visit the ‘Devices’ section in the online wallet and disable the listed phone with the wallet on it.

While these new features make Google Wallet a lot better suited for mass adoption, it will still have to wait a while until most smartphone vendors start shipping out NFC-enabled smartphones. You can watch the video below to learn more about Google Wallet:
