Last Friday, January 11, Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz committed suicide. After his suicide, the U.S. Attorney office has quietly dismissed charges against him.
Aaron Swartz was accused of illegally downloading nearly 4.8 million articles and documents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through the academic database JSTOR with the intention of posting them on a file-sharing site. For long time he had been fighting to prove himself “innocent”. However, his trial was scheduled to begin in April. But as Swartz unexpectedly committed suicide on January 11, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz and the lead prosecutor on the case and assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Heymann, hanged a three-line dismissal notice of charges against Swartz at court on January 14. Here is the notice.
