Back in 2009, Loren Kulesus, a very imaginative digital designer came up with a very strange looking concept called the Cadillac World Thorium Fuel Concept. We already reported that Connecticut-based (USA) Laser Power Systems (LPS) is working on developing this car that would run nearly 100 years using only eight ounces of thorium.
Although some people laughed at Kulesus’ concept, LPS took Kulesus’ idea seriously and it started preparing prototypes since 2011. However, LPS has already devised a number of thorium engines (prototype) which can consume thorium as fuel. This thorium-powered engines use thorium to power a laser, which then heat water, create steam that turns into a small turbine and propel the car.
LPS’s current prototype thorium-powered car weighs around 500 pounds. The engineers behind making this conceptual car are now trying to take the concept to a new level so that in future, the car can run for 100 years on a mere 8 grams of thorium. That means, each car would save 7,396 gallons of gasoline from burning over a century.
At present, LPS thorium-powered car isn’t quite ready for a road trip. Till now, no actual thorium-powered car has hit the road yet. When LPS CEO Dr. Charles Stevens was asked to say something about the car, he said that he didn’t “have time to comment.”
