VirusTotal Releases Malware Detection App Compatible With Mac

VirusTotal is a Google-owned site that provides free tools to scan for viruses and other security threats. The company has now released a Mac-compatible version of its flagship VirusTotal uploader app, available for free.

VirusTotal Uploader app for Mac

Until now, the VirusTotal app was compatible only with the Windows-based machines, so the new version of the app is meant to reach out to the Mac users as well. The app works with the web service of VirusTotal, scanning files and links for any hint of malware.

According to the official page of the app, the Mac-compatible version comes with a number of really useful features such as the ability to drag-and-drop any file to the VirusTotal Uploader. Once a file is dropped in the Uploader, it automatically scans it for security threats with the help of more than 50 antivirus solutions.

Mac users can also drag-and-drop a Mac application in the Uploader to determine if it contains any viruses. According to VirusTotal, “Hopefully this will lead to VirusTotal receiving more Mac applications, diving deeper into an increasingly targeted OS by attackers and allowing antivirus companies and researchers making use of VirusTotal’s backend to build stronger defenses against these threats.”

It remains to be seen how Mac users respond to a non-Apple security tool such as this, especially in view of the fact that VirusTotal app has proved to be a very useful tool for Windows machines. You can download the Mac-compatible version of VirusTotal here.
