Volvo Car Italia launched a competition named “Switch to Pure Volvo” to construct a temporary pavilion that could express “a strong and creative identity” to showcase the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid — the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid production car — at open-air fairs and presentations. Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA) has won that Switch to Pure Volvo competition due to making an awesome pavilion.
SDA participated in that competition with the pavilion name “Pure Tension Pavilion.” To decorate the pavilion, SDA used a high density polyethylene (HDPE) mesh skin with integrated photovoltaic panels.
SDA stretched over a web of carbon fiber rods. The pavilion was able to charge the Volvo V60 with the power of solar in a unique way. And interesting, the solar chargers could be folded away and stored in the V60’s trunk.
Currently in development, the Pure Tension Pavilion will go on display in Rome on September 15, 2013. The competition was organized by international architecture magazine The Plan.
