Apple has earlier promised that it would make the earliest units of the latest iMac machines available before the end of the year. The company lived up to its promise and a large number of users have already received their new iMacs. However, some of the new iMac models bear a rather surprising text.
Multiple reports from users as well as certain tech blogs suggest that many new iMac machines bear the following text, “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in USA.” This is rather surprising because Apple’s machines usually bear the ‘Assembled in China’ text.’
Also, Apple’s official filings clearly state that the company has no manufacturing facilities in the U.S. That makes the whole thing a tad bit confusing. The popular website, iFixIt, also laid its hands on an early unit of the new iMac and it has confirmed that the machine did indeed bear the text citing that it was made in the U.S.
At the same time, most of the new iMacs do contain the text ‘Assembled in China’. In the past too, a small number of Apple’s products have bore the ‘Assembled in US’ text but that hasn’t been very significant. Apparently, the company manufactures a much selected, few of its units domestically while the bulk is indeed manufactured in China.
Since Apple itself hasn’t given any official statement which may indicate a change in this policy, we can rest assured that the company is not about to shift its manufacturing entirely to U.S.
