Microsoft has released a preliminary version of its Skype VoIP client for Windows Phone 8. Although it is still a preview version, it is completely functional and offers some great features.
In June, when Microsoft was showing the new features of Windows Phone 8, they had explained that the Skype client will add support for multi-tasking and present a better integration within the mobile OS. These remarks were announced again at the end of last month, when Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.
Now, when we are finally able to access to preview version of Skype on Windows Phone 8, we can see many new features; such as, possibility to send instant messages as well as voice and video calls to contacts through Wi-Fi and 3G. Microsoft says that the best quality can be achieved on smartphones with at least 512 MB of RAM. Once installed, this new application offers users authenticate with their Microsoft account and let them send messages to contacts from Windows Live Messenger. It is also important to know that the list of friends from Skype will immediately be added inside the Windows Phone 8 contacts section.
One of the new and eagerly awaited features is the ability to receive calls and messages even when the application is closed. Microsoft says that this functionality is still under development.
