Activision Blizzard, the game industry giant, apparently had an especially successful last year. According to the yearly numbers put forth by the company, it was able to manage a revenue of $4.86 billion during 2012, bagging a handsome $1.1 billion in profits.
Both the revenue and the profit during 2012 are the highest Activision Blizzard has managed so far. The success was also reflected well in the results of the final quarter of 2012, during which the company posted a revenue of $1.77 billion, of which $354 million raked in as profit.
One of the key reasons of the company’s excellent performance during 2012 is the wild success of World of Warcraft. Currently, the game is the most popular subscription-based multiplayer online role-playing game. And although there has been a slight decline in the total number of subscribed users of the game during the final quarter, it still commands 9.6 million subscriptions.
Another sizable revenue stream that has contributed to the big numbers is the Skylanders franchise. It was launched as far back as 2011, but continues to bring in big business for the company, grossing at more than $1 billion in retail sales ever since the launch.
The digital business alone brought in $1.6 billion for Activision Blizzard during 2012. That accounted for 32 percent of the total revenue that the company earned during the entire year. Other major game titles such as Diablo III have also been doing remarkably well and we can see the success of these titles continue well into 2013, bringing Activision Blizzard another fruitful year.
