GigaOM has reported that Apple’s working on creating a SIM card that will be integrated into the iPhone itself. That means customers will be able to choose their carrier at time of purchase at the Apple web site or retail store, or buy the phone and get their handset up and running through a download at the App Store as opposed to visiting a carrier store or calling the carrier.
According to GigaOM the universal SIM card would only be for the Europoean market at first. This would allow customers to keep the same SIM card no matter what carrier they are on. Unfortunately, a model like this currently wouldn’t work in the US, with AT&T having exclusive rights to the iPhone. However, as Gizmodo speculates, this could all change when the transition to 4G takes place.
Thanks
